Facts and Events
Mary Patching was baptised on 29th October 1738 at Horsham in Sussex, daughter of Mary Patching, formerly Longhurst, and her husband William Patching, who was described as a gentleman. Mary was the couple's second child, but her older brother had died as a baby, making Mary effectively the eldest child. She had one younger sister, Sarah, who was baptised in 1740.
Mary's father died in April 1758. Just over a year later, Mary's mother died too. Mary and her sister Sarah appear to have inherited their father's house on East Street in Horsham between them.
In April 1760, Mary wrote her will. She left her share of the house in East Street to her sister Sarah, along with some silver spoons and a silver porringer and her clothes, whilst her aunt Mary Longhurst (wife of her uncle Walter Longhurst) was left six silver teaspoons, a pair of sugar tongs and a strainer. Any money or other property was left to her uncle Walter Longhurst, who was also appointed executor.
Mary was presumably unwell when she wrote the will; it was written on 4th April 1760 and she was buried less than three weeks later, on 24th April 1760 at Horsham. She was 21 years old.
