Mary Longhurst was the daughter of Martha Longhurst, formerly Andrews, and her husband Walter Longhurst, an ironmonger. No birth or baptism record has been found for her, but she was probably born in the early 1700s – her parents had married in the London area in 1701 and then had three children baptised at Horsham in Sussex between 1702 and 1705.

On 1st November 1735 Mary married William Patching in London. They were both said to be of the parish of Horsham when they married, and they returned there after their marriage.

Mary and William had three children baptised at Horsham between 1737 and 1740, although their eldest child (and only son) died when only three months old.

Mary’s father died in 1741, and her mother died in 1750.

In 1751 Mary and her brother Walter and sister Martha were all named in a bond concerning some land at Fishbourne near Chichester, about thirty miles from Horsham, but which appears to have had some connection to their parents. Mary was described in the bond as the wife of William Patching, gentleman.

William died in April 1758 and was buried at Horsham. Mary survived him by just over a year. She was buried at Horsham on 1st June 1759.
