[edit] Information on Mary McFaddenFrom Find-A-Grave.com:
Mary "Polly" was the daughter of William McFadin (often spelled McFaddin). She was born in 1787 in Kentucky. Her family migrated to Knox County, Territory of Indiana around 1806. Knox County was divided in 1814 and Posey County was created in the southern part. The town (and present county seat) of Mount Vernon was originally known as McFadin's Bluff, named for Andrew McFaddin who settled in the area around 1806. Andrew was likely William's father and Polly's grandfather. Little is known about Polly's youth; however, she was remembered by Governon Alvin Hovey in an historical sketch: "Polly McFaddin, whilst in a block house with other women and children, shot an Indian who was in the act of stealing the horses in the corall (sic)." By 1814 she had married Peter Hendryx (or Hendricks). She and Peter acquired Posey County realty which had belonged to her deceased father William McFadin. Within two years, Peter Hendryx died and Polly was left to administer the estate. At his death, Peter "left two children surviving, to wit Rachael aged about 4 years & William aged about 2 years, and one other" unborn child, later named Catherine. On March 12, 1820 Polly married John "Jack" Givens, Jr. He was a good deal older; one estimate places him as being sixty-four years of age. Polly was about thirty-three years of age. The 1820 U S Census indicates that John was farming in Black Township, Posey County. Living at home was Polly and three children, a boy and two girls. These were most likely Polly's children by her first husband Peter. Jack died sometime in the early 1820s as there is a record of Polly's marriage to Archibald KcKinney on October 22, 1823. By 1830 Polly was head of a Mount Vernon household which included four dependents. One of those was a girl younger than five years. It is assumed that this was a child of Polly and Archibald McKinney. Givens family tradition, however, suggests that Jack and Polly may have had a child. In any event, it would not have been the child indicated in the 1830 census as she would have been married to Archibald. On September 16, 1831 Polly again married. The wedding, which was performed by H. Holland of the Methodist Episcopal Church, united her with Samuel James. A daughter, Angelin, was born the following year. In 1850 Polly lived in Mount Vernon with Angelin and son-in-law John Patterson, then sheriff of Posey County. When Polly passed away is not known. It is assumed she was buried in Templeton Cemetery near Mount Vernon where many of the Givens and McFaden families are interred. Her husband William and two of her children (Rachel and William Jr Hendryx) are buried there. Family links: Spouse: John Givens (1757 - 1823) |
