The Givens family is of Scotch-Irish descent, and came first to Virginia, from what part of Ireland is not known. George Givens, grandfather of George Givens, of this town, came to Bourbon county, and built a house on Silas creek, which is part of the division line between Harrison and Bourbon. Samuel Larame had come to Kentucky at the same time George Givens came, and built a house in Harrison county, on Silas creek. They had been old friends and neighbors in Virginia, and their intimacy only ceased with the death of one of them.

Alexander Givens, son of George Givens, married Mary Larame, daughter of Samuel Larame. Their children were George, Samuel, William, David, and James; the daughters — Nancy married her cousin, Alexander Givens ; Isabella married William Steele ; Margaret, Richard Jamison ; and Mary married Mr. Frizell, of Dayton, Ohio ; Lavinia is unmarried. John Givens, brother to George Givens's grandfather, represented his county twice in the legislature.

The only male descendant of this branch of the family bearing the name Givens is D. L. Givens, M.D., son of David Givens and his wife, Margaret (Keller) Givens.
