Dispatcher Mary Ethel (Kunkel) Crumrine (1926-2017)

Mary was born October 30, 1926 to George, a machinist at Latonia Race Track, and Gertrude (Fugge) Kunkel. When Mary was 1½, her father died in an auto accident, leaving her mother with a newborn and three other children between 2 and 6 years old. Eventually, Mary went to live with her cousin. She attended Holmes High School, graduating during June 1944.

On April 21, 1950, she married United States Navy Yeoman George Lewis Crumrine, recently returned from World War II. Five weeks later, George joined the Cincinnati Police Division as a Police Recruit. He was recalled to service for the Korean War, returned to the Police Division, was promoted to Specialist and then to Sergeant, and died of natural causes on October 24, 1974.

With a small widow’s pension and five children at home, Mrs. Crumrine immediately sought employment. From January to March 1975, she worked as a Tax Examiner with the Internal Revenue Service. On March 23, 1975 she joined the Cincinnati Police Division’s Communication Section as a federally funded P.S.E. Employee and Assistant Operator/Dispatcher. When that program expired, she was hired as a provisional employee and made permanent June 8, 1980. She was promoted to Operator / Dispatcher on May 13, 1984 and consistently earned “Superior” performance evaluations from her supervisors and commanders. At 65, Dispatcher Crumrine retired on September 1, 1992 with 17 years of service.

She was predeceased by husband and a son-in-law, Michael H. Martin. Dispatcher Crumrine was survived by her children, Cindi (Gerry) Berding, Nancy (Bud) Taylor, George (Kim) Crumrine, Mary Beth Martin, and Kim (Lou) Schnier; grandchildren, Anna Berding (Prashant) Singh, Dan (Lauren) Berding, Greg (Lisa) Berding, Jacquie Berding, Reid Taylor (Lymarie Prudencio), Ryan Taylor, Rachel Taylor, Doug Martin, Elizabeth Martin, Cori Crumrine, Grace Crumrine, Mary Claire Schnier, and Catherine Schnier; and greatgrandchildren, Nina Singh, Mira Singh, Evey Berding, June Berding, Sebastian Taylor, and another on the way.
