Mary Kistner lived with Edith (Beal) Steensland and with Ralph and Frieda in her later years. She died at the age of 77 in Montevideo. Mary was a very refined and meticulous person. Lots of wonderful qualities but difficult to get along with. Very high strung. Auburn hair. When Mary and Harvey would have an argument, she would leave the house and walk around the section. Harvey would hitch up the horses and go to get her (which she expected he would do). One time she went around the section one way and he went the other so she had to walk the entire 4 miles until the "found" each other. On Mary's golden wedding anniversary (Harvey had died in November of 1933) she left church and walked out to the cemetery to visit his grave. She didn't tell anyone where she was going or why. Marguerite and Aunt Marie Horstman found her out there and brought her home. She had been out there crying and was very upset. (She loved sympathy)!!!

The following pages include information on the ancestry of my Maternal Great grandparents, Harvey and Mary Kistner Beal. They emigrated from Hannover, Germany. Mary’s father died of a stroke in the outdoor toilet. Mary’s mother came to America in a sailboat. The voyage took 6 weeks of travel.

Harvey and Mary were married on July 16, 1887. She weighed 100 pounds on her wedding day. Her wedding dress has been saved through the years and is at Stanley Beal’s home. Mary was a refined and cultured lady who taught school. Harvey and Mary’s children were Ralph, Jesse, Elsie, Harold.

They were members of the Baptist church in Grouver, Iowa. In the early 1900’s the Beals’ moved to Mission Hill, South Dakota. Later they would move to the Round Lake, Minnesota area. After Harvey died, Mary lived with her son Ralph until her death October 8, 1941. Both Harvey and Mary are buried in the Round Lake Cemetery.
