Lancaster county?) PA Death: 13 FEB 1850 in Richmond Falls,,VA Note: Source: Federal National Archives No. S9088. William (Cody) Richmond Sr. served in the Revolutionary War from Oct. 1775 to Nov. 1777, 3rd Virginia Regiment commanded by Col. Neville, from Botetourt Co. Filed pension in Greenbrier Co. VA in 1832. He enlisted in Lt. Wood's Company, Botetourt Co., VA. He marched with the troops from Botetourt to Savannah Fort (now Lewisburg) where the company wintered. Then under Col. Neville he went with Capt. Andrew Hamilton against the Indians. He received a pension in Greenbrier Co. in 1832, this pension being paid until Oct 1849, VA. No., 16535. William Richmond eventually settled by 1797 (according to Monroe Co. and Greenbrier Co. Deeds) owning land on both sides in the area then known as New Richmond, near Richmond Falls, and today known as Sandstone, near New River Falls, WV. He lived to 98 years old, and lived variously in Greenbrier now Monroe Co. (may have acquired land as early as 12/24/1783 on Swope's Knob), then acquired land on east side of New River in Greenbrier Co. then Fayette Co. now Summers Counties, and on west side of New River in Montgomery, now Raleigh Co., Virginia--today West Virginia. He is believed to buried on the lower end of the island in New River just downstream from the Richmond Homestead. At New Richmond/Sandstone the family operated a ferry which proved service until the 1970s. It is believed that, based on the fact that there were many Richmonds in Pennsylvania at that time and historical pattern of movement, William Richmond may have been born in the Chester/Lancaster/York County area of Pennsylvania. There is no conclusive evidence. Source: Iona Richmond, Mansfield, OH, provided, 7/16/1999, by e-mail the following. "The island mentioned in your notes was known a Jake's Island (for Jacob Richmond, son of Wm, the original settler). Jacob sold the island to his youngest brother Samuel. There are many local legends about the graves on the island including that of an Indian grave, The locals have identified the spot where Wm was buried which is now a rock pile on the Bragg farm, not the island." Source: Frieda M. Davison, Columbus, MS, provides by e-mail (5/30/1997) an abstract of "Census of Pensioners for Revolutionary or Military Services," Originally published in Washington, 1841, and reprinted by the Genealogical Publishing Co., 1974, which lists William Richmond, age 89, living in the household of Shadrick Martin, Fayette Co., Western District, Virginia.

Roy Richmond posted on the internet that he is a descendant of William through Jacob. He states that he still lives near where William brought the family after the War of 1812. They settled in Richmond bottoms on New River. There they operated a Grist Mill above the falls and also had a ferry. The area once known as New Richmond is now known as Sandstone. One Civil War decendant was known as "Devil Bill" a fierce fighter. The ferry operated between Raleigh County held by the Union and Summers County held by the confederates. It was at this ferry that a Jefferson Bennett shot the young Samuel Richmond in the back. Bennett was later found along with his dog shot to death at his cabin.
