Mary Hutchings was baptised on 2nd May 1806 at Crewkerne in Somerset, daughter of Ann Hutchings, formerly North, and her husband William Hutchings, an agricultural labourer. Mary appears to have been the second of four children.

On 3rd December 1839, aged 33, Mary married a widower named William Scriven, who was a cordwainer (shoe maker). At the time of their marriage Mary was living at Allington in Dorset, which was where they married, but after their marriage they returned to Crewkerne. The 1841 census finds them living on West Street. Mary's niece Mary Hutchings, daughter of her brother Edmund, was living with them. Mary and William had a son named Adolphus in 1841, then a daughter named Elizabeth Ann in 1842.

In May 1844 Mary's daughter Elizabeth Ann died aged just eighteen months old. Mary herself died just over six months later, being buried at Crewkerne on 3rd December 1844. She was 38. William outlived her by several years.

This burial can be linked to the Mary Scriven wife of William from the 1841 census on the basis that three of the children from the 1841 census (Eliza, Joseph and Adolphus) appear in the 1851 census living at the Castle Inn, but apparently being looked after by their paternal grandmother - see Adolphus' page for transcript.
