Facts and Events
Elizabeth Hutchings was born around the start of 1805 and baptised when she was said to be 22 weeks old on 7th June 1805 at Crewkerne in Somerset. She was the daughter of Ann Hutchings, formerly North, and her husband William Hutchings, an agricultural labourer, who had married about nine months before her birth. Elizabeth was the eldest of their four children. Elizabeth was married on 18th April 1833, aged 28, to Thomas Vincent, an agricultural labourer from Thorncombe in Dorset. They had a daughter named Betsy Ann baptised later that year in Crewkerne. She was followed in 1836 by a daughter named Emma, also baptised at Crewkerne. Elizabeth's mother Ann died in 1836 in Crewkerne. Some time between 1836 and 1839 the family left Crewkerne and moved to the hamlet of Purtington in the parish of Winsham. They had a son James whilst living there, although he was baptised in the neighbouring parish of Cricket St Thomas - the church there was nearer than that at Winsham. The 1841 census finds Elizabeth, Thomas and their three children living at Purtington. In 1842 Elizabeth had a daughter named Mary Ann. She was baptised on 6th August 1842 in a private baptism, which is often a sign that there was a chance the child might not live long. Sadly Mary Ann did indeed die young, with her death being registered in the same quarter as her birth. She was buried at Cricket St Thomas on 10th August 1842. Elizabeth died a few weeks later. She was 37 years old. She was buried at Cricket St Thomas on 25th September 1842. Thomas survived her by over fifty years. He married again in 1850, appearing in the 1851 census still at Purtington with his second wife and his son James. References
