Several sources show her name at the time of her marriage to Ephraim Hatfield as "Mary Smith Goff," implying that "Smith" was her maiden name and her 1st husband was named "Goff." She may be Mary (or Maria) Smith, the sister of Rachel Smith, Ephraim's stepmother. The Hatfields and the Smiths did intermarry at a number of points.
