Mary Louise and her brother, Mike co-owned Smokey the Welsh Pony. Mike remembers the horse getting "drunk" by eating the fermenting apples that fell on the ground. - Told to Shawna Gambol Woodard by A. Michael Gambol.

Mary Louise Gambol's great grandmother was a CICON (Slovak). https://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Barbara_Cicon_%281%29
Looking at Vincentian High School yearbooks there was a Mary J. Cicone who attended with Mary. Might Mary J. Cicone be a relative or is Cicone an Italian name?

Mary was a Tomboy when she was young. She did not care to be feminine and always wore a hat.

When she was about 18 months old, while playing, she fell on a metal round peanut can and received a severe cut to her forehead, through her eyebrow, and upper lip. The cut required some 18 stitches to repair. I believe she tried to hide the forehead scar by always donning a hat.

Mary was always interested in making money, she collected bottles (back then we got 2 cents for every returned pop or beer bottle). She was the first girl in Lake County to get a paper route with the Cleveland News. Her route was about 50 patrons and many would only subscribe to the paper for a three-month period. She worked this out with them as the paper often ran promotions requiring carriers to get new subscribers. She'd have them subscribe first in the wife's name, quit for a few months, and then the next promotion in the husband's. Through these programs, she was able to earn a reinforced carrier bag, a baseball glove, other items kids back then would desire, and through extensive planning an "English-Racer" style 3-speed bicycle. Mary earned 2 cents a week for each customer, but when collecting weekly (the paper was $.42) most folks would tell her to "keep the change" as they offered two quarters.

With the money earned from the paper route, she was able to pool her resources with Mike to purchase Smokey, a Welsh pony. She enjoyed him very much and mucked out the stall and cared for him. She and Mike totally paid for his food, bedding and care. Mom and Dad didn't give us an allowance, so if we wanted things we had to figure out ways to make money.

Mary loved card games and we often played "Michigan-style" poker, rummy, and other games. She always wanted to be the banker and she always had money...she kept all her coins in a "jewelry box" that both of us got one Christmas. Mary's jewelry box was full of nickels, dimes, and quarters.

Mary went to a private residential high school, Vincentian Academy in Pittsburgh, PA. Our cousin, Sr. Charlotte, was our directress and was very strict with us. Once Mary thought the nuns made sloppy blessings in the morning, so as a prank, April Fool, she put ink in the holy water fount and as the nuns blessed themselves they showed their sloppy blessings on their white collars and coifs. https://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Leona_Gambol_%281%29

She was an excellent student and was very athletic, excelling in baseball, softball, and basketball. In high school, she was captain of the basketball team. She was active in academic clubs and was particularly involved with the high school yearbook. She worked on the yearbook for three years, the irony was that our senior year, Vincentian decided not to publish a yearbook in a cost-saving measure. Had they published, she most certainly would have been its editor.

Mary held various leadership roles in student government, class treasurer, president, etc., and also served on Student Council.

She graduated magna cum laude from Kent State University and then earned her Master's degree in physical therapy from the D.T. Watson School of Physiatrics (a joint affiliation program of the University of Pittsburgh and Thiel College). She became a Licensed Physical Therapist.

She was a leader in her field and had many friends. She began her practice in Lubbock, Texas, and then in Canon City, Colorado. She returned to Ohio and established the physical therapy program for the Lake County Society for Crippled Children and Adults. It was while working there that she discovered many of her clients were not being schooled, as back in 1970, the concept of mainstreaming children was novel.

She approached the Mentor Public Schools and worked with the guidance counselors there to identify orthopedically handicapped children who were homebound as no accommodation was made for them to access the schools. She helped to design access for the students, overseeing making restrooms handicapped accessible, ramps for the sidewalks, and installation of elevators in the two-story structured schools. By the fall of that year, some 40 students who previously were home-bound were now able to attend classroom schooling. She worked with faculty, staff and parents to successfully establish full integration of these students into the school. She offered on-site physical therapy to the students via a visiting schedule to each school and she worked with the guidance counselors to evaluate appropriate career counseling for the high-school students. She was successful in securing electric typewriters for her high-school students so that they could respond to assignments and take tests.

Mary loved sports and challenges. In Texas, she learned to tool leather. She made us all beautiful gifts of leather. She had a terrific eye and enjoyed photography. She also very much enjoyed travel. When she was 16 she traveled to Europe with Mom, and Aunt Sue. They sailed on Princess of Canada and spent 28 days touring Europe. Mary took all the photos. She often would jump in her car and visit friends and relatives in far-off places, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, etc.

Her life was abruptly ended by suicide. I think we all feel guilty that we did not see this coming. Her death weakened all of us and to this day, I tear when I think of her.

Mary was ebullient and full of energy. When she entered a room it became alive. - email from Margaret Gambol Bash to Shawna Gambol Woodard on 6 Dec 2022
