!Obituary from the Iroquois County Democrat; May 19,1899. Provided by the Iroquois County Genealogical Society, copy in possession of SMS. Mrs. Mary Flynn Kane Mrs. Mary Kane, widow of the late John Kane, died Monday afternoon May 15, 1899, of heart failure, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Morris Kane of this city, aged 83 years, 6 months, and 14 days. "Grandma" Kane was one of our city's oldest people and her death was not unexpected for she had been feeble for some time. Her daughter-in-law, from whom she has had the tenderest care for many years, was with her when the summons came, as were also her grand-daughters, Mrs. Chas. Wright, and Mrs. Geo. Eastburn. Mary Lynn [sic] was born in Kerry County Ireland, November 1, 1815 and was married to John Kane April 10, 1839. The children of this union were Daniel, Morris, Nora, and Anna, who have all preceeded her. The family came to Bloomington, Ill., in the spring of 1857, removing from there to Old Middleport in 1862. For many years they lived near Irouquois and here the husband and father died May 23, 1887. [sic] Her only remaining child, Morris Kane, died April 23, 1890, and since this time "Grandma" has held an honored place in the home of his wife and children. Mrs. Mary Kane was a woman of true worth and those who knew her respected and honored her. Her heart and soul were in the work of the church to which she belonged and before the infirmities of age and ill health weighed too heavily upon her she gave much of her time and best endeavor to its service. Her passing was calm and peaceful, she having recieved the last rights of the church she loved and was at peace with God and man. A solemn mass was celebrated over the remains by Rev. Father Mainville of Hoopeston in the Roman Catholic church of this city, after which interment was made in Prairie Dell cemetery beside her husband and two children." Comments: This obituary included quite a bit of unique information. There is complete list of the children, including the name of Anna. Mary's birthplace in Kerry County, Ireland, is included. There is a new death date, and a new calculalted birth date. (Death date on the tombstone was her burial date? Other information also discrepant with the tombstone.) Other unique information included a marriage date for Mary and John, the residence in Bloomington, Illinois from Spring 1857-1862, and the Catholic Father that buried Mary with the indication of a church. (To Do: Are there church burial records where an exact town of birth was recorded for her?) !Potential brother for Mary Flynn: Ancestry.com Message Boards: Re: Mary Flynn Kane (1815-1899) of County Kerry & Illinois Author: Colleen Massey Date: 30 Dec 2001 6:24 PM GMT In Reply to: Mary Flynn Kane (1815-1899) of County Kerry & Illinois by: Robert Heisler There may be a link here.....my ggrandfather was Redmond Flynn whose parents may have been Maurice/Morris and Nancy Flynn. But he was raised by Annie Flynn in Chicago. He then married Nelly Boyle whose parents were from County Kerry. From Robert Heisler in Response: Thank you for the response. Would you happen to know Redmond's birth date and place, as well as his death date and place? Perhaps he was a brother to Mary Flynn Kane. Since Morris/ Maurice Kane was Mary Flynn's second son, he may have been named for her father, if they followed the traditional naming system at that time. If so, that could tie into your Maurice Flynn line. References
