A New York Times obituary for her brother in law Samuel F. Conkling of Delphos Ohio refers to her as Emma Gates wife of Jerome Conkling. It also refers to her as a poet, editress and suffragist. Another article in the New York Times (Mar. 11 1883) refers to her as dying. The article gives her address as 318 W. 12th Street. It says that she was a well-known suffragist and active temperance worker. Her death is recorded in the New York Times (Mar 20, 1883).
