  2. Obituary
    Meyersdale Republican.

Published Mar 17, 1921 - Mrs. Mary E. Marten died at her home at Morantown, near Mt. Savage, on Friday night, Mar 11th from a complication of diseases incident to old age. She was born in Vienna, Austria on Dec 6, 1840, coming to America in early 1880's, a great many years of her life being spent at Eckhart Mines, MD. She married J.C.Marten, a Civil War veteran of Wellersburg, PA on May 1, 1891, at which place they lived until a few month ago when they moved to Morantown, MD. She is survived by her husband & one sister, Mrs. Jacob Briner of Eckhart, MD. Her funeral was held on Tues morning at the St.Michael's Catholic Chruch at Frostburg, Rev. Father Quinn conducting the requiem mass. Interment in the Frostburg Catholic Cemetery. Although of a quiet retiring disposition, Mrs. Martens had a host of friends. She was a true Christian, a good neighbor & a loving helpmate, & although she never had any children of her own, she took to her heart the children of her husband by two previous marriages, always according them & their families a sincere welcome in her home & ministering to their comfort as a true mother would do. During her last illness several of her step-children were privileged to be with her; also her sister, Mrs Briner. She was a devoted Catholic and was given spiritual solace by her pastor at Mt.Savage, Rev Father Dowling, who administered the blessed sacrament the day before her death. Her 80yrs were spent in quiet usefulness & death came as a welcome release from infirmities the years had brought. NOTE: the local name for Morantown was Slabtown. Also, the marriage date was the 18th (per the pension file) not the 1st.
