Mary didn't marry until she was almost 40 yrs old. As a spinster, she care for her parents and, when they died, inherited or somehow acquired much of their antique furniture. She married a "no-good" and when she died, her husband sold all the furniture, much to the chagrin of the Dotson family. The family managed to buy back some of the pieces.
