Marriage 6 Mar 1849 to Balas Deweese

Balas, a son of Isaac U. and Katherine (Carr) Deweese, was born in Jackson County VA (WV) August 25, 1828. He enlisted for service in the Mexican War at Ripley, VA in April 1847. By July 20, 1847 he had arrived in Mexico, where he served with the 11th Regiment of New York Infantry. He was discharged in New York August 18, 1848.

   In 1861, Absolom Knotts and Balas organized an army company in

Calhoun County VA (WV). The company went South and in the spring of 1862, was attached to the 14th Regiment of VA Cavalry. That same year, Balas assumed command of the company, Captain Knotts having been elected to the Confederate legislature.
