- From Genforum.com Message Board:
- Seek info on Major John Cantrell, born Sept. 1780 to Eleanor/Nelly Clendinen probably in Greenbrier Co. (W)VA. Nelly was d/o Charles Clendinen, founder of Charleston, WV. Eleanor also had a child by Andrew Hamilton, and (finally) married George Stephenson about 1783. She later moved with her Clendinen family to Kanawha and finally Mason Co. WV. It is not known who the CANTRELL father of John was. Found a Chas. Clendinen living with a Wm. Clendinen in Orange Co. NC ca 1780's where there are several CANTRELLS, and possibly Nellie was there when she conceived. It is not known what happened to the child, but as an adult, he rejoined his Clendinen kin in Point Pleasant, WV and lived most of his life there. There is a Joseph and Isaac Cantrell in early Orange Co. records. Could one of these have been the father of Nellie's baby? Was he raised by Cantrells? I remember hearing of an adopted son, John CANTRELL, by one of the Cantrells in TN (possibly Stephen) and birthdate would have been about right...1780. Anyone know anything more about any CANTRELL in VA around 1780, or who the father of Major John Cantrell of WV might have been?
