Mary Ellen Chapman was born on 11th August 1874 at Preston in Lancashire, daughter of Ellen Chapman, formerly Hegarty, and her husband Isaac Chapman. The family was not from Lancashire; Isaac was from Ely in Cambridgeshire and Ellen was from Ireland. Indeed, Isaac and Ellen had married in Ireland the previous November, marrying at Buttevant in County Cork, where Isaac had been serving as a soldier with the 20th Regiment. By the time Mary's younger sister Annie Elizabeth was born in 1877 the family had moved to London.
The 1881 census finds Mary living with her parents and siblings at 2 Stanhope Road in the New Southgate area in Middlesex, in the rapidly expanding northern suburbs of London. By 1891 Mary had left home and was working as a domestic servant for a wholesale druggist at 2 Grove Road in New Southgate.
On 1st August 1896, aged 21, Mary married James Moles at St Paul's Church in New Southgate. They went on to have six children together between 1898 and 1910, all born in the Southgate area. The 1901 census finds James, Mary and their children living in two rooms at 27 Lower Park Road in Southgate. By 1911 they were living in a four-roomed house at 17 Palmers Road in New Southgate. James worked as a labourer in the building trade.
By the end of the First World War the family had moved to 45 The Avenue, which was just over the border from Southgate into the neighbouring Friern Barnet Urban District. Some of the electoral rolls give Mary's name as 'May Ellen Moles', suggesting she may have been known as May rather than Mary. James died in 1928, aged 55.
For the first couple of years after James's death Mary continued to live at 45 The Avenue with her youngest two children, James Frederick and Mary Kathleen. Around 1935 they moved a few doors down to 52 The Avenue, and some time between 1937 and 1939 they moved again to 7 The Homestead on Waterfall Road. Although only just around the corner and still in the general New Southgate area, 7 The Homestead administratively fell within the East Barnet Urban District in Hertfordshire.
Mary died in the Barnet district in 1959, aged 84.
