Mary Chalkley's origins have yet to be established. Her first confirmed sighting is on 16th April 1718, when she married a butcher called William Walby at Shoreditch in the suburbs of London. They moved to Hatfield in Hertfordshire after their marriage, having three children baptised there between 1720 and 1723.

Mary died in 1751, being buried at Hatfield on 24th September 1751. William outlived her by nine years.
