Mary Cain's origins have yet to be established for certain. It is quite likely she was the Mary Cain baptised on 12th July 1730 at Kimpton in Hertfordshire, daughter of Henry and Sarah Cain.

In 1749, she married a Richard Lincoln in the nearby parish of Ayot St Lawrence. Richard died in 1757 and was buried at Welwyn. His burial describes him as a labourer.

Two years later Mary married again back in Kimpton, when she married a tailor named John Swallow. Mary and John had two children together, but Mary died just two years after her youngest daughter's baptism. Mary was buried at Kimpton on 17th February 1764. John outlived her by ten years and remarried five years after her death.
