J Lewis Bumgardner was called to Staunton, Va, last Saturday, by a message announcing the death of his mother, Mrs James Bumgardner, Jr. Mrs Bumgardner suffered a stroke of paralysis several weeks ago, mention of which was made in the Herald at the time, and while there was for a time some improvement in her condition, she was unable to recover wholly, and after the first slight improvement continued to sink until the end.
Mrs Bumgardner was about 68 years of age, and the mother of a large family. Practically all her long life was spent in Staunton and its immediate vicinity, where she was well known and esteemed for her many estimable qualities. A devout christian, she was ever foremost in doing whatever her hands found to do in aid of her less fortunate fellows, and showed not by words alone, but by deeds as well, the faith that was in her.
To the bereaved husband and children remains the consolation that her days of suffering are over; that she has entered into her well earned reward and that the world is better for her journey through it.
