The 1850 census lists him as Monroe Conwell and shows him living in Liberty (Union County), Indiana with his wife, Mary (age 19 ). In 1857 and 1858 James M. Conwell of Conwell and Holmes purchased land in Cincinnati, Ohio from the estate of his uncle, David Conkling. The deed says that James lived in Cincinnati with his wife, Mary. James was a merchant. The family lived most of their life in Richmond (Wayne County), Indiana. In 1877, the Richmond, Indiana papers report that Mary took an extended trip to Europe with her daughters. Mary Conwell’s obituary appears in the Richmond, Indiana newspaper on 15 March 1901. It says that she was born in Richmond, Indiana and was the daughter of Christopher Buhl. The obituary says that her husband, James M. Conwell had died a number of years earlier. James probably died prior to 3 March 1866 as his father’s will written on that date gives bequests to the children of his son, James Monroe but does not otherwise mention James. Mary and her children are buried at Earlham Cemetery in Earlham, Indiana. James’s burial place is unknown.
