Identity

Whether this Mary Brown, wife of Jonathan, is this Mary Brown is disputed. Holman in Pillsbury Ancestry, states "(v)arious authorities state that she was the daughter of Nicholas and Mary (Linforth) Brown, born in Haverhill, 3 May 1671. There are several deeds in the Essex Co. Registry which proves this to be incorrect of which the following is one.."S1 The deed dated 22 May 1730, identifies the children of Nicholas & Mary (Linforth) Brown, names "Mary Brown" as having sold to her brother Ebenezer her rights to the land. Perhaps Holman provides this deed to indicate that "Mary Brown" is not identified as being married as other siblings had been identified by their married name.

"It is probable that Mary Brown, wife of Jonathan Merrill, was a daughter of that Nathaniel Brown who served as a witness to Jonathan Merrill's deeds. There was a Nathaniel Brown with wife Judith, who had a daughter Mary, but she is said to have married John Hubbard, in 1710." S1
