Facts and Events
Mary Berry's origins have yet to be established. She indicated in the 1841 census that she had been born around the late 1780s or early 1790s in Hertfordshire. Her first confirmed sighting is on 19th October 1811, when she married an agricultural labourer called James Copps at Weston in Hertfordshire. They went on to have ten children baptised at Weston between 1812 and 1838, although two died as babies. The 1841 census finds Mary and James living with some of their children and grandchildren in Weston. Her son James died as a young man in 1842. Mary died in 1847, and was buried at Weston on 24th February that year. There was quite a discrepancy between the ages quoted on her death certificate, which says she was 58, and her burial record, which says she was 45. The death certificate is more consistent with the age she had indicated in the 1841 census. James outlived her by about fifteen years. References
