Facts and Events
[edit] About Martin GreenfieldMartin "Marty" Greenfield was born 8 December 1917 in Akron, Summit County, Ohio, the son of Benjamin Greenfield (1891-1968) and his wife Leah Koch (1893-1982). His father Benjamin, of Hungarian ancestry, was born in New York shortly after his parents emigrated to America; and his mother Leah was born in England. Marty grew up in the grocery business as his father was a pioneer in the groceery business, who opened his first store, Greenfield's Midnight Market on Western Avenue near Santa Monica Blvd., in 1921. Marty helped out in the family store when he was growing up; his mother taught him how to cook and make salads. Marty attended Fairfax High School and Los Angeles City College in Los Angeles. When World War II started, Marty went into the United States Army, and became, not surprisingly, a cook. Since he loved cooking, this proved to be a fortunate assignment for him and likely the soldiers he cooked for. After the war, Marty went to work for Mayfair Markets as a Deli Manager and then for the Westchester Food Palace in the same capacity. In 1952, Marty was transferred to the Panorama Market in Van Nuys which at the time was enjoying the largest volume of any market in the country. When Food Giant bought out the Panorama Market in 1956, Marty was promoted to Deli Supervisor of the chain. In 1961, Marth joined Fedco Discount Stores as their Deli Buyer and General Supervisor of deli operations, which included managing the store's snack bars and take-out food departments. Marthy came to Supreme Foods and F&G White Fronts in 1964 as Director of Delicatessen Operations. It then operated a chain of 11 stores, including six discount house stores and 5 "ranch style" markets which featured a large produce section and a Western motif. Three of these latter stores operated as Hollywood Ranch Market, Jack's Ranch Market in Culver City and Bill's Ranch Market in Burbank. While working at Supreme Foods, Marty was active in a local Southern California food-industry trade association, the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council (DDBC), an organization that still exists today in 2014. For his leadership in the Deli industry, he was recognized by the Deli Council in November 1966, when he received its "Big Cheese" Award. In December of 1966, Marty resigned his position of head of delicatessen operations at Supreme Foods and accepted the position of production manager at Grand Taste Packing Co..
