Research Statement: The purpose of this report is to show that John Joseph Brennan and Martin Stanislaus Brennan are brothers. John Joseph Brennan(1851-1930) John was born 1 July 1851 in Saint Louis, Missouri to John Brennan and Mary Shanahan.[1] No marriage record could be found, but the 1900 U.S. Federal Census says he married Mary Waters in about 1873.[2] He died 12 August 1930 in Saint Louis.[3]Both John and Martin ran a grocery store in Saint Louis named Brennan and Brother beginning in 1872. Martin Stanislaus Brennan(1850-1904) Martin was a brother to John Brennan. Martin was born in Ireland in about 1850 and married Margaret Scully in Saint Louis.[4] Martin left the family grocery to work for the Saint Louis City Assessor’s office, and later became a real estate agent. He died 22 April 1904 in Saint Louis.[5][6] The following table shows the Brennan brothers in the Gould’s Saint Louis City directory. It lists the year, address, and occupation of each brother.

John Brennan is a common name in Saint Louis at this time, as demonstrated by the number of men named John Brennan. However, Martin Brennan, and in particular, Martin S. Brennan, is not as common. In fact, the city directories in this time frame list only two Martin S. Brennans in the city. The other is the Reverend Martin S. Brennan, a Catholic priest. This helps differentiate the two Martin S. Brennans. The city directory helps us see Martin Brennan transition from running a grocery, to working in the city assessor’s office. The 1880 U.S. Federal Census lists John as a grocer. He is listed with his wife, Mary, and children, Mary, John, James, and Katherine. The family is living at 822 Summit Avenue, which corresponds to the address in the city directory.[7] The 1880 U.S. Federal Census lists Martin as a clerk. I believe this means he is a clerk in the city assessor’s office. This census shows Martin living with his family.[8]Also, subsequent directories, showing him working in the assessor’s office, also help to confirm his identity The probate records for Margaret (Brennan) McCoy lists both Martin S. Brennan and John J. Brennan. Martin is explicitly stated as being the brother of Margaret. No explicit relationship is given for John, but he is a witness in the records. Also, he is named the guardian ad litem for Mary Bridget McCoy, the daughter of Margaret.[9]
John and Martin are listed as working for Brennan Brothers grocery in several Saint Louis City directories. This, and the fact that they live in the same address in 1872, shows that they are brothers. The 1880 U.S. Federal Census links these two men to their families. Probate records for Margaret (Brennan) Connelly show that the three, Margaret, John, and Martin, are siblings.
