Atlanta Woman, Aged 100, Dies
Victoria Goodpasture Past Century Mark
Mrs. Victoria (Whisler) Goodpasture, 100 years old, died at noon today at the home of her niece, Mrs. F. P. McDaniels, in Atlanta.
One of the oldest women in this area, Mrs. Goodpasture was born August 11, 1843, near Atlanta in Hamilton county. She was the daughter of Jacob W. and Sarah (Jackson) Whisler.
She married Calvin Goodpasture December 11, 1859, at the home of her parents. The ceremony was performed by Squire James Shields of Shieldsville.
Mr. Goodpasture died in 1878, over half a century ago, in Leadville, Colo., of typhoid fever. He was prospecting for gold at the time and had been there about one year. His father, Allen Goodpasture, was one of the early day settlers of Tipton county.
Three children were born to the couple. Flovis, son, died at the age of 18. Hudson, another son, died at the age of 15, and a third son, Carl, died at the age of 24. All were buried in the Arcadia cemetery.
Following the death of her family, Mrs. Goodpasture remained in Atlanta and maintained her home by renting rooms.
She was a charter member of both the Christian church and the Rebekah lodge and remained active in both groups until her health became too poor. Recently, she had been residing with a niece.
The only survivors are a sister, Mrs. Barbara Sowers, of St. Louis, Mo., and nephews and nieces.
The body was removed to the Young funeral home here but services have not yet been arranged.
The death of Mrs. Goodpasture severed another tie with the settlement of the Tipton-Hamilton county area.
She was born in a frame residence erected in the year of her birth on a farm two miles southeast of Atlanta. A log house nearby the place of her birth had been erected by her father in 1841.
