1st Marriage: Martha Mills was married to Charles Hawkins in about 1852. No records have been found that she was dismissed from the church, but Charles was dismissed from the Quaker church, on 24 Feb 1853, for marrying contrary to discipline of the church. Their son, Jonas, was born 20 Jul 1857 in Warren Co., Ohio. On Jonas’ first birthday, 20 Jul 1858, at age 28, Charles died. He is buried next to his father, Henry, in the Caeser Creek Friends Cemetery, Chester Township, Clinton County, Ohio. In about 1976 the cemetery along with the village of New Burlington were flooded by the waters of a man made lake. From P. C. Spencer's "The Families Hawkins, Mills, Confer, & Gillett with Related Lines:" 1853 - Disowned, married contrary to Discipline. ??Maybe the discipline was because Martha Mills was too closely related?? P. A. Hawkins 25 Jun 2000. The following was copied from the Cesar Creek MM Men's book (Ch. Of LDS, Family Center Microfilm # 477171) by Phillip A. Hawkins on 6 Aug 2002. Cesar's Creek MM of 2, 24, 1853 (pages 514-5): ..."Cesars Creek preparation meeting complains of Charles Hawkins for accomplishing his marriage contrary to discipline John Cook & John Spray are appointed to take an opportunity with him & report their sense of his disposition to next meeting"... Hinshaw Vol V, p176: "1826, 12, 28, Martha Mills (form Hawkins) dis mcd." ............... 2nd Marriage: Martha married Nathan Cook, b. abt 05 Nov 1826, d. 08 Feb 1895, 26 Dec 1861 in Clinton County, Ohio, USA. Martha had returned to Tipton County for sister Elizabeth Smiley's funeral in November and was staying with son Jonas Hawkins. She became too ill to return to Huntington, Indiana and died 12 April 1909. (Hawkins Family) Martha was a member of the Quaker (Friends) Church in her youth. She joined the Christian Church in 1870. (Hawkins Family) From Robert Belden' (St. Louis, Missouri) genealogy collection - Mr. Belden in Dec., 1988 found an item in his collection that states "each summer Thomas Gilpen (Martha's uncle,Sarah's brother) would come to Indiana with 2 horses and then would take one of his nieces back to Clinton Co., Ohio to spend the summer." The item mentions Martha going one summer and meeting her future husband, but no husbands name was in the item. Now Mr. Belden feels that the "future husband" was our Charles Hawkins. (Thomas Gilpin, according to Mr. Belden's belief was childless.) (Hawkins Family - HTH) Martha's Tipton Tribune obituary stated, "The deceased at one time was a resident of this county, living on a farm in the small neighberhood east of Ekin, that being about forty-eight years ago....will be intered by the side of her husband in the family lot at Huntington."
