BIOGRAPHY: Rev. Solomon Townsend of Barrington, Rhode Island His Ancestors and Descendants By Robert W. Townsend Family History Publishers Bountiful,Utah August 1997 Page 84 - 85 The handwritten marriage record at Bristol Town Hall definitely says that Martha was the daughter of "Mifs Saray May", so we conclude that she was an illegitimate child, whose father very possibly was a seaman at that thriving seaport town, and long gone by the time Martha was born. Sarah May was the daughter of John and Sarah (Gladding) May, born say 1750 in Bristol and baptized at the congregational Church in Bristol 20 Sep 1761, along with a brother and three sisters. She married in Rehoboth, Mass. 31 Aug 1777 Simeon Ingraham, who is listed in the 1790 census for Bristol with two boys under 16 and five females (probably Sarah and four daughters). Sarah's father John May (Elisha 4-3,John 2-1) was a chairmaker in Bristol, a descendant of John May of Roxbury, Mass. |
