Short bio on B. W. Burlingame and Mattie (Hollenbeck) PARDEE

The following is an excerpt from History of Herkimer County, New York

I modified it a little because I don't have the original to work from anyway, and because it was filled with so many personal pronouns it took me hours to decipher who was supposed to be who. I added paragrah spacing to make it easier to read. There are a few obvious errors in it. For example, There's no such date as "June 31" ("Thirty days has September, April, June, and November..."). The dates on Francis Hollenbeck's and Margaret Emery's gravestones contradict the dates given here.

Whenever I get a copy of the original, I'll present it exactly as it was written, or maybe I'll just post a scanned image of the page next to my interpretation.

Burlingame, B.W., Russia, [NY,] was born August 19, 1849, in Minden, Montgomery County.

His [B.W.'s] father was Peter B. [Burlingame], son of Benjamin Burlingame of Dutchess County, who [Benjamin] married Elizabeth Bice and had four sons and two daughters. His [Benjamin's] wife died in 1810 and he married a widow Dempster of Kingsbury. She [the widow] died and he [Benmamin] was a third time married. He [Benjamin] died near Gray about 1852, aged seventy-six.

Peter B. Burlingame was born July 29, 1804 in Dutchess County. November 17, 1834, he married Sarah E. Bonfie, a native of Montgomery county, born February 14, 1812, and a daughter of Barnabas Bonfie, who was a son of Henry, a native of Connecticut, who had seven children.

Barnabas Bonfie was born January 13, 1785, in Amsterdam, [NY] and married Polly Smith, of Dutchess County, born February 22, 1787, by whom he had seven sons and three daughters. He died in Gray, 1871, and his wife in 1874.

Peter B. Burlingame and wife had four sons and three daughters, two of whom are living, [(1)] subject of sketch and [(2)] Mary E., who has three children living. Her mother resides with her [Huh? Who's "her" and who's the other "her"?]. Barnabus E., son of Peter B., was in the 117th New York Infantry, Company C., and died May 25, 1863, aged 19. Mr. Burlingame [See what I mean? To which Mr. Burlingame does this author refer?] died January 14, 1888, in Grant.

The subject [B.W. Burlingame] is a carpenter by trade, but his principal occupation has been farming. He is a Republican. He is a member of the Free Will Baptist Church and his wife is a Methodist. Mr. Burlingame was twice married: First to Alma S., daughter of Henry Caruthers. She was born June 31, 1853, and died August 29, 1886. They had two children, of whom one died in infancy, Frank W., born October 26, 1884. His second wife was Mattie (Hollenbeck) Pardee, born in Salisbury, October 10, 1845. Her father was Francis, son of Jasper Hollenbeck, born near Hudson, who married Miss Van Wormer, by whom he [Jasper] had four sons and two daughters. Francis Hollenbeck was born near Hudson, 1810.

[Comment by Rich Hollenbeck: actually it was 10 Oct 1809, according to his gravestone.]

His wife was Margaret A. Emery and they had three sons and two daughters. He died October 26, 1872, and his wife died in 1881.

[Comment by Rich Hollenbeck: The gravestones at Cater Cemetery, near Kirksville, MO, set the death date for Francis as 26 Oct 1892 and the death date for Margaret A. (Emery) Hollenbeck as 7 Jun 1888.]

Subject's [B.W. Burlingame's] wife [Mattie Hollenbeck] was first married in 1868 to Joseph Pardee, born 1837, in Russia [NY], a son of Loren and Betsy (Prindle) Pardee of Russia. Joseph Pardee and wife had two children: Merritt J., deceased, and Edith G. Mr. Pardee died in 1871.
