Martha Dennis was born in 1878 at Birkenhead in Cheshire, daughter of a labourer named John Dennis and his wife Rose. Martha appears in the 1881 census living with her parents and siblings at 17 Eldon Place in the town. By the time of the 1891 census, Martha's father had died.
On 24th November 1897, Martha married a cattle drover and dock labourer called Alexander Kelly. They married at St Nicholas' Church in Liverpool, but settled back in Birkenhead, which is also where he was from. The 1901 census finds them living at 2 Brook Square. In 1911 they were living at 24 Lord Street, and reported that although they had had seven children, only two were still living: Martha and Mary.
Alexander died aged just 33, on 8th September 1911 at the Workhouse Infirmary in Birkenhead. In 1918, Martha's daughter Martha also appears to have died, leaving her with only one surviving daughter, Mary, out of seven children.
In 1924, Martha remarried. Her second husband was a dock labourer named Daniel Redmond, who was originally from County Wexford in Ireland. The marriage was brief; Daniel died just over two years later in 1926.
In 1929, Martha's only surviving daughter, Mary, married. Martha lived to see four grandchildren from this marriage.
Martha died on 5th May 1938 at the Municipal Hospital in Birkenhead.
