In Alfred, N. Y., Mrs. Martha Thorp, better known as Aunt Patty, in the 84th year of her age. Aunt Patty was born in Massachusetts, Dec. 1, 1798. When a child, she, with her parents, emigrated to Rensselaer county, where she was married to Russell M. Davis, July 16, 1815. They came to Alfred, October, 1816. Jan. 9, 1819, Aunt Patty was left a widow, with two small children to care for. Feb. 23, 1820, she was married to Palmer Burdick. To them were born nine children, all living to grow up. Few mothers during those days of pioneer life better cared for eleven children than she. She was again left a widow Aug. 28, 1850. She was married to John Thorp Oct. 11, 1865. He died Sept. 18, 1868.
She professed religion when thirteen years old, and united with the M. E. Church. In 1830, she united with the 1st Alfred Church. In 1857, she joined the 2d Alfred Church.
In 183_??, she became insane, and, for five years, had no care of her family; sometimes much more afflicted than at others, but at no time fully sane, until a short time previous to her death, when she seemed as quiet and as sane as ever. It was a great relief to the children and only brother who have patiently, kindly, and tenderly cared for mother, and sister, to see her once more as lucid as could be desired. H. P. B.
