Miss Marjorie J. Burdick, 80, Parkview Terrace Apartments, Milton, died Friday, July 1 in Mercy Hospital, Janesville, following a long illness.
She was born in Jackson Center, Ohio on Dec. 25, 1896, the daughter of the late Rev. Willard D. Burdick and Nettie West Burdick. She graduated from Milton Academy in 1915 and from Milton College in 1919. She later received her master's degree in religious education from Boston University. She taught in elementary schools in New Jersey, Ohio, and Wisconsin and for a number of years taught religious education in several churches in New Jersey and Michigan. She was actively involved in establishing and directing summer camping programs in the Seventh Day Baptist denomination. She was also a member of the Woman's Board for several years and was awarded the board's 'Robe of Achievement' in 1969 for outstanding service. In 1976 she received the 'Gold-Headed-Cane' award given by the Seventh Day Baptist Historical Society for her assistance in the field of denominational history.
Since her retirement from teaching in the Milton elementary school, she has been active in tutoring, Boy Scout work, in the Milton Historical Society, and in the work of the Seventh Day Baptist Church of which she was a member and deaconess at the time of her death. For many years she was a teacher in the primary department of the Sabbath School.
In 1976 she was honored by the Milton Kiwanis Club as the 'Citizen of the Year' in appreciation of her services to the community.
Surviving are a brother, Russell, many nieces and nephews and cousins. A brother, William, predeceased her.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 10 at 3 p.m. in the Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church. Private burial will take place after cremation. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the Seventh Day Baptist Church or the Milton Historical Society. The family has requested that flowers be omitted.
