Obituary - January 1945

Mario Raffetto Passes Away at 51 Had Been in Ice Cream Business 22 Years

The Ridgewood Herald News January 11, 1945

Mario Raffetto, of 135 Ackerman Avenue, Ridgewood, died at home on Monday after a prolonged illness. He was in his fifty-second year.

Mr. Raffetto was born in Genoa, Italy and was brought to this country when only a year old. After residing in New York City for about six years, his parents moved to the Argentine, as his father wanted to go into business with a relative in that section of South America, and there young Mario received his schooling. Some ten years later they came to Ridgewood where Mr. Raffetto Sr. went into a partnership in the ice cream business with the late Joseph Corsilia, his brother-in-law, whom many will remember as proprietor of a bakery on Prospect Street. It was here that Mario learned how to manufacture ice cream.

After three years his father opened his own establishment on East Ridgewood Avenue, the son joining in the business, which he took over on his father's death. The ice cream plant on Ackerman Avenue has been in operation about seventeen years, and Mrs. Raffetto and the oldest son, Louis, hope to continue the business there.

Besides his wife, Ethel M. Raffetto, Mr. Raffetto is survived by three sons, Louis, James and Peter; two daughters, Jean Marie and Irene Raffetto; one brother, Joseph Raffetto of Glen Rock, and four sisters, Mrs. Emil Cottave of Glendale, Calif.; Mrs. Gerald Jodry of Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Marvin Vardsell (Birdsell) of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Mrs. Marvin Hughes of Bakersfield, Calif.

Funeral services will be held at Mount Carmel Church Friday at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Marycrest Cemetary, Darlington.

Mr. Raffetto was of genial personality and always sought to give satisfaction to his customers. He was highly regarded for his business acumen.
