  14. MARIETTA BYERLY Obituary:

Marietta Byerly, born July 5, 1894 to John and Elizabeth in Warrensburg, Missouri, and deceased December 24, 1974 in the Oakhill Nursing Home, Jones, Okla.

As a child she moved with her parents to Payne County, Oklahoma, near Coyle, In the early, 1900's she and her family moved to Elk City where she attended school. After high school she taught grade school in the Elk City area before entering McPherson College, McPherson, Kansas. Following college graduation, with a degree in Home Economics, she taught in the Hillsboro, Kansas High School for 3 years. The next couple of years she attended school to obtain her Masters Degree in Home Economics and her certification in Dietetics.

Most of her teaching has been in college in the Home Economics department. She taught in the Junior Colleges in Warner and Poteau and began in Murray State College in Tishomingo in 1937 and retired after 23 years.

Early in life her goal was to make a dedicated contribution to the educational field in which she spent 40 years teaching. Her desire was to inspire and encourage youth to prepare for life that they too could make a contribution to others. She was especially interested and continually encouraged her nieces and nephews to seek an education that would better prepare themselves for life.

Miss Byerly was active in Community life. She was a member and served as an officer in the local Chapter and a State Officer of the Business Professional Women's Club. She served as sponsor and officer in the Delta Kappa Gamma Society at Murray State and also in the State Society.

In her girlhood her life was committed to serving Christ. She united with the Church of the Brethren. Through life, serving and witnessing for Jesus Christ was a daily part of her life. Each Sunday, where ever she may be found her in Church as a Sunday School teacher singing in the Choir and giving thanks for God's great love and goodness. She was a devout Christian and loved and respected by all with whom she came in contact. Upon moving to Tishomingo she became a member of the Methodist Church and was an active and faithful member and worker.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Hazel Byerly Fowler, Colorado and 21 niece and nephews and a host of friends.

Old time, old memories! First Roy's reminder of the June reunion. Then Orvill's Promise of a "Memories" edition in May it calls back the years.

And the years have been good. I taught home economics in the Murray State Agriculture College for 23 years. By that time my roots were well down in Tishomingo, and just before retirement in 1960 I built a home here. I'm happy in the home that isn't too big nor too little and happy also in the community that is just right for my living.

As for grandchildren, I have a substitute, a flock of nieces and nephews (first, second, and third rounds). Some are near and some farther away. They satisfy.

What do I do? Well first of all there is church - Sunday School teaching, choir, official board, Women's Society, teaching mission study classes. Then Business and Professional Women's Club and Delta Kappa Gamma takes some attention. I've served each of these as president for two-year terms. There's lots of good reading to do, puzzles to work, Forty-two to play with friends, and of course homemaking and entertaining. I feed birds in winter and give time to garden and lawn in season.

So life is still very good. Everywhere I go there are former students to greet; they make another substitute for family.

I wish the best of everything to all of you and, if possible, will see you in June.
