PENOBSCOT - Marie M. Bridges, passed away Monday, Dec. 20, 1999, at the Penobscot Nursing Home, after a long illness. She was born Feb. 4, 1908, at the Mitchell House in South Penobscot, the daughter of Fred B. and Persis (Cushman) Mitchell. She was the Matriarch of the Mitchell family and enjoyed the Mitchell reunions every year. She was a graduate of Clark High School in Penobscot and Machias Normal School. She taught in rural schools until her first marriage in 1927 to Merle Leach, who predeceased her in 1930. She later married Carl Bridges to whom she was married for 53 years. For several years, she worked at Blodgetts' Market and assisted her husband with his strawberry and Christmas wreath business. She was the oldest living member of South Penobscot Baptist Church; a 50 year member of Castine Grange and Penobscot Chapter No. 107 Order of Eastern Star. Marie was "Poet Laureate" of Penobscot and entertained with her original poems, skits and piano playing. Until she lost her eyesight, she knitted and crocheted many articles for her beloved family and friends. Many remember her baseball story. She is survived by her three children, Carolyn Blodgett and her husband, Donald of Penobscot, Alan Bridges of Penobscot and Edith Bridges of Newington, Conn.; 15 grandchildren, including one special grandson, Alden Blodgett of Penobscot, Michael Blodgett of Augusta, Gerald Blodgett of Brunswick, Donald Blodgett II of Scarborough, Jacqueline Curtis of Standish, Brian Bridges and Julie Hinds of Arizona, Alan Mitchell Bridges II, Stephanie Bobak, Carl Randal Bridges, Cindy Ross and Sharon Bridges of California, Robert Leach of Colorado, James Leach Jr. and Suzanne Libby of New Britain, Conn.; 13 great-grandchildren. Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 14 Elm St., Bucksport. Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday at South Penobscot Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Hutchins officiating. Interment will be at Bay Cemetery, Penobscot. Donations may be made in her memory to Hancock County Homecare, P.O.
