Birth

Marie Jeanne Mentzel was born on 27 February 1817 at 1 a.m. in the large military base (La grande Cazerne) in the city of Gent. Her parents are Frans Mentzel and Anthonia Heer. She was born out of wedlock, but later during the marriage of her parents recognized as a legitimate child of theirs.

Death

Mortality rates of infants were high in the nineteenth century. There is an interesting article of child mortality in Dutch [1]. Marie Jeanne Mentzel is no exception to the rule and she died in the winter of 1818 in the city of Gent, at 4 p.m. on 21 December 1818 in the military base in Gent.
