Marie (Broekema) Rowell, 88, of Manhattan passed away June 16, 2008. She was born June 30, 1919, on the family farm five miles south of Churchill, near Little Holland Road. She was the third of six children born to Henry and Jennie (VanDyken) Broekema. Marie stayed home to help her ambitious Dutch immigrant parents on a dairy and chicken farm until age 24.

She worked at MSU one year in the registrar's office and decided she didn't like paperwork and figures as well as people and personalities, so she went to sales clerk work for approximately ten years in Montana, Michigan and Arizona.

Marie then took L.V. nurse training in Washington and enjoyed the hard work and all the drama of lives from birth to death in hospitals for about 25 years in Washington, Montana and California.

On May 19, 1970, Marie married her long-time friend, William N. Rowell. Following his death in California on Dec. 21, 1996, Marie retired in Montana where she had fond and sentimental memories of her youth, childhood home, church and rural schools.

Marie's hobbies were oil painting, china painting, crafting, sightseeing and enjoying God's world of nature and animals. Marie testified of her faith in God and of the peace she knew because of Christ's sacrifice for her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Peter Broekema and his wife, Winifred, and Herman Broekema; two sisters, Jean (Broekema) VanderVeen and Henrietta (Broekema) VanderPol; and one niece, Leanne (Broekema) Miller.

Marie is survived by one sister, Dorothy (Barney) Sluys of Kalamazoo, Mich.; one sister-in-law, Margretha Broekema of Manhattan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
