Bozeman Daily Chronicle (MT) - December 5, 2004

Herman Broekema, 76, a resident of the Churchill area for his entire life, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at his home after a two-year battle with bone cancer. Herman was born in Manhattan on Nov. 25, 1928, to Henry and Jenny Broekema. His family was involved in farming and ranching south of Churchill. He attended elementary school at the Hills School in Godfrey Canyon and Manhattan Public High School. He received his G.E.D. while in the Army.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 and served in the Korean conflict from 1951 to 1953. After his discharge he returned to the family farm and married Margretha Veltkamp on Jan. 5, 1954. She was the love of his life, and they had three daughters, Diann, Leanne and Sherri.

Herman was active in Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Churchill and served there as deacon and on the Gallatin Valley Diaconate. He enjoyed farming, and for years was a ham radio operator. He always enjoyed visiting with friends over a cup of coffee and his mischievous smile and upbeat attitude were infectious. But his real passion was flying. He loved to fly and enjoyed both fixed-wing aircraft and his gyrocopter. He built, rebuilt and repaired several airplanes and helped others do the same. He never really retired, and he and Margretha completed their final harvest together this fall. We will all miss his friendly demeanor and positive outlook on life.

Herman was preceded in death by his daughter, Leanne Miller; his brother, Pete; and two sisters, Jean Vander Veen and Henrietta Vander Pol. He is survived by his wife, Margretha; daughters, Diann (Mike) Smit of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Sherri Tanis of Wilmington, Del.; grandchildren, David (Mysha) Zegen, Jerry Miller, and Tina Miller of Gallatin Valley; Ryan (Amie) Smit of Phoenix, Ariz., Adam Smit of Sioux Center, Iowa, Shanna (Tom) Hamilton of Twin Falls, Idaho.

He is also survived by two sisters, Marie Rowell of Churchill and Dorothy Sluys of Kalamazoo, Mich.; brothers-in-law, Jim (Eileen) Veltkamp, Harold (Aileen) Veltkamp; sisters-in-law, Evie (Tom) Veltkamp and Stephanna (Don) Bos.

A remembrance of his life will held at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Churchill on Monday, Dec. 6, at 10 a.m., with graveside services to follow at Hills Cemetery.
