In Alfred, July 28th, 1861, of heart disease, Maria Whitford, consort of Samuel Whitford, aged 30 years. When her husband arose that morning, about five o'clock, she appeared to be sleeping quietly. Coming in after about an hour, he found that breath had left her body, though a slight fluttering of the heart was still perceptible. All efforts to resuscitate her proved unavailing. It seems that she had made an effort to get up, as her feet were off the bed. She attended church the day before, and appeared as well as for months. At the family altar, that evening, she expressed gratitude to God that she had been permitted to enjoy one more sanctuary privilege - little thinking, probably, that it was her last on earth. Such is human life. She was noted for her frank and generous nature. She leaves a desolate husband and a large circle of friends to mourn her loss.
