Maria Holt was born on 6th February 1824 at Totternhoe in Bedfordshire, daughter of an agricultural labourer called John Holt and his wife Elizabeth. Maria appears in the 1841 census living with her parents at Lower End in Totternhoe.

In 1842, aged eighteen, Maria had a son called Thomas.

On 24th July 1845, Maria married Jasper Kempson, who was known as Jesse. They had four children together at Totternhoe between 1845 and 1853, called Elizabeth, Mary Ann, John and Sarah. The 1851 census finds them living at Totternhoe, with Maria working as a straw plaiter, whilst Jesse was an agricultural labourer.

Jesse died towards the end of 1854, aged just 32. Maria was pregnant at the time; she gave birth to twin girls in February 1855, called Patty and Jane. Both twins died young. Jane died later in 1855 and Patty died in 1856.

Maria went on to have another daughter called Patty in 1859, whose father is unknown. The 1861 census finds Maria and her children living on Stordy Lane in Totternhoe. Maria had another son, William, in 1862.

In 1867, Maria remarried. Her second husband was an agricultural labourer called John Cook, who was from the nearby village of Edlesborough. The 1871 census finds Maria and John living on Stordy Lane in Totternhoe with five of her children. Maria was still working as a straw plaiter.

Maria died in 1877, aged about 53.
