Maria Diemer, one of seven children of Nicholas and Margaretha Hatt Diemer, was born December 5, 1846, at Gottesheim, Alsace-Lorraine, France. There she grew to womanhood, and was married to John Marzolf at Gottesheim on December 26, 1869. In October 1871 she came to the United States with her husband and infant son, John, and brother, John Diemer, other members of the family having preceded her to this country and Nauvoo. They settled in Nauvoo. Eight children were born to them, four boys and four girls.

Mrs. Marzolf was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and during their first years here the familybecame members of Christ Lutheran church of Nauvoo. She was a charter member of the Ladies’ Aid Society of the church.
