Definitely Margaret Scott who married one John Thompson 4 July 1801 in Corbridge, Northumberland, England. Her daughter Margaret named one of her sons Scott (and the preceding son had been named Thompson, their surname was Morden) and her daughter Nancy did the same (Thompson Smith and then William Scott Smith, commonly called Scott Smith). Another unique name that shows up as a forename or middle name in the descendants of her children with John is "Moray."

The identification of Margaret Thompson, wife of John Thompson, as Margaret Barber Thompson, occurs on page 250 of Burr's book ("John also settled on Big Island. His wife was Mary Thompson, daughter of John Thompson and Margaret Barber Thompson"). This is a one-chapter, three-page reminiscence of the Moran family (Mary's daughter Mary married John Moran) signed "Dr. W. K. Burr, 1925". Mary Barber has been identified as the mother of Margaret Scott and it must be assumed that Burr or the person he heard this information from had incorrectly merged the two generations over the preceding 100 years or that Margaret used her mother's maiden name as a middle name during her lifetime.

  7. Mary Barber was Margaret Scott's mother, either later histories merged the two generations and record John Thompson's wife as "Margaret Barber" or she went by Margaret Barber Thompson (Scott) during her lifetime.
