IV. Bryce or Bricius Sempil of Cathcart, who succeeded him, and got a charter under the reat seal from King Charles I. Bricie Sempil de Cathcart, terrarium tenandria de Greenend, comprehenden. Etc. ac etiam terrarium templariarium, in vicecomitat. de Renfrew, etc. dated anno 1637.
This Bryce was a man of parts and probity, was appointed sheriff of Renfrew, and bailie of the regality of Paisley, which appears by another charter under the great seal to him, officii vicecomitis de Renfrew, et balivatus realitatis de Paisley, etc. dated anno 1642.
He was a great loyalist, suffered many hardships on account of his attachment to the interest of the royal family, and was fined by parliament in the sum of 1,000l. sterling, anno 1646.
He married Margaret, daughter of Sir Lauder of Hatton, by whom he had three sons.
1. William, afterwards Sir William, his heir.
2. Gabriel, minister of the gospel at Jedburgh, who, by Margaret his wife, daughter of Sir Patrick Murray of Blackcastle, was father of Mr. Sempil minister of the gospel at Liberton, etc.
3. James, who settled in Sweden, where his posterity still exist.
He died anno 1652, and was succeeded by his eldest son, Sir William Sempil.
