Margaret Farrell was born on 2nd December 1878 in Dublin, daughter of a tailor named John Farrell and his wife Rosanna Reid. The couple had ten children, but Margaret appears to have been one of only three to survive childhood: Julia, Margaret and William. Her father John appears to have died some time before 1901, as the census that year finds Margaret with her widowed mother and two siblings. She was still at home at 19 Stephen Street in 1911, and working as a shop assistant in a bakery. Her brother William became a Catholic priest and emigrated to America.

Margaret never married. She died on 4th April 1926 at 4 Abercorn Terrace in Rathmines to the south of Dublin, at which address her sister Julia had been living in 1911. Margaret's death registration describes her as a shop assistant. She was 47 years old. Her brother William died later that year and his obituary reports that both his sisters had also recently died within a short time of each other, but that their mother was still alive.
