Facts and Events
The name "Cournane" which was on the birth certificate of Margaret Courtney (Sister Mary Sebastian) was another spelling for the family. It was her understanding that the two names referred to the same family. Their early ancestors migrated from France. The second daughter of Daniel Courtney was Sister Mary Sebastian. She entered the order of Sisters of Charity BVM in Dubuque in 1855. From one of the Sisters at the motherhouse the following was received: "Sister Sebastian was remembered as a nun who was a model of virtue, faithful to every duty and eminently holy. Her skillful management of business affairs and her excellent judgment" was also part of their memory. She was very fond of her brother Dennis and kept in touch with him throughout her life. He called her "my colleen bawn." Sister Sebastian died on July 9, 1906, and is buried at the Mt. Carmel Motherhouse in Dubuque. |
