Daughter of Christopher Barrett, mayor of Norwich in 1634. Children by first marriage: Christopher, Ann, Simon, Henry. She came to Windsor with her second husband Thomas Stoughton, but is listed separately as a qualifying ancestor by the Descendants of the Founders of Ancient Windsor because of her Huntington children.

Margaret Barrett was daughter of Christopher Barrett, mayor of Norwich in 1634. In 1649 her brother Peter Barrett wrote to her son Christopher regarding a legacy due to "yourself [Christopher], Symon, Thomas and Ann" from their grandfather. In 1671 another of her brothers, Thomas Barrett, spoke of his sister "Margaret who married to one Symond Huntington who carried her to New England & had several children by her; but we can give no account of her or them, yet think that she & several of her children are living there" [ Hale, House 648, citing Joseph James Muskett, Suffolk Manorial Families, 3 vols. (Exeter 1900-1914), 2:153-60]. (This information and much more, including the known Barrett pedigree and a dismissal of the proposed Huntington English pedigree, were published by Jacobus in 1952, the best account available of the immigrant family, lacking only the Norwich parish register entries [ Hale, House 647-51].)

MARGARET BARET, bapt. at St. Andrews Parish, Norwich, England, Sept. 29, 1595; m. probably at Norwich, England, SIMON HUNTINGTON (q.v.). In 1637 she sailed on the "Elizabeth Bonaventure" with her husband and children, arriving at Boston June 15, 1637. Her husband died of small pox just before landing. She went to Roxbury, Mass., where she married (2) in 1635 or 1636 Lieutenant Charles Stoughton and went with him to Windsor, Conn. in 1635. She survived his death which occurred on March 25, 1661/2. The date of her death is not known.

| Windsor was the first permanent English settlement in Connecticut. Local indians granted Plymouth settlers land at the confluence of the Farmington River and the west side of the Connecticut River, and Plymouth settlers (including Jonathan Brewster, son of William) built a trading post in 1633. But the bulk of the settlement came in 1635, when 60 or more people led by Reverend Warham arrived, having trekked overland from Dorchester, Massachusetts. Most had arrived in the New World five years earlier on the ship "Mary and John" from Plymouth, England. The settlement was first called Dorchester, and was renamed Windsor in 1637.
