Facts and Events
Marcus Winchester was captured with his father at the River Raisen in 1813, near Quebec. They were released six weeks later. Marcus established the first store in Memphis, TN, in 1819. The town had been founded through the efforts of his father, Gen Andrew Jackson and Judge Overton of Nashville. Marcus served as their agent and became the first mayor of the city in 1827. He also served as the first postmaster there from 1823 to about 1844. When he died, he was buried in Memphis on property donated by the Winchester family for use as a cemetery References
