Obituary

Hamilton -- At the residence of her son, U.S., Shenandoah, Iowa, on the 21st of January, 1881,
Malinda, wife of Levi Hamilton, aged 71 years, one month and twelve days.

Sister Matilda (should be Malinda), wife of Bro. Levi Hamilton, was born December 9th, 1809, at Columbia, Kentucky. Her maiden name was Malinda Creel. Was married on the 25th of October, 1825, and about a year after under the ministration of Rev. Wm. Harris. connected with the Cumberland Presbyterian church. She resided in the State of Kentucky until the 1st of October, 1835, when the family removed to Walnut Grove, McDonough Co. Illinois, being on the way a little over a month. Here she and her husband connected with the same branch of the church. In 1873, they removed to Bushnell, Illinois, and lived with their son Silas H. From this place they removed to Galesburg, Illinois, and made their home with their son U.S. On January 8, 1878, they with their son U.S. removed to this place where they have since resided. At the residence of this son, on the 21st of January, 1881, our sister departed this life, after much patient suffering; but it was only to enter that blessed rest that awaits the people of God. the years of her pilgrimage on earth were 71 years, one month and twelve days, and of her married life, 55 years, two months, and twenty six days. She was a member of the Presbyterian church of this place. As to her Christian disposition, she was ever happy and cheerful. She delighted in engaging in that which tended to promote the cause of religion. In earlier years, her house was ever open to entertain strangers, especially those engaged in the work of the Master, and not only those of her own denomination, but of all denominations. Camp meetings being held on the farm of the family for eighteen consecutive years, she did her share to act the part not only of the good Mary of old, but also of Martha. In her family she was ever attentive to the wants and wishes of others. As a wife, she was devoted; as a mother, affectionate; as a church member, consistent and zealous, as a neighbor, obliging and charitable. Her last suffering lasted one week at the end of which her Saviour in whom she had trusted for over fifty years, took her home to rest. All during her sickness she earnestly prayed the Lord to help her and bless her. Once when her suffering was very great, she was heard to say "O Jesus! pillow my weary head on thy bosom."
