Major Caleb Dowell was the son of Benjamin F. & Betsy Desha Dowell. He was born about 1814 in Maury Co., Tn. He was married to Mary S. Booker in 1833 in Maury County. They had the following children: Susa, Reuben John, Lorenzo, Major Caleb Jr, JamesPolk, Mary "Aunt Mard", Perry & Jacob. Major Caleb Dowell was the grandson of John & Anne Franklin Dowell. I show the following as siblings to Major C. - There was Adaline, Benjamin Jr, Nancy, Elizabeth, Pleasant and Patience. ( Pleasant & Patiencemay have been twins.) There are some gaps in the births, so others may have been born to this family. Any questions, please feel free to contact me. James E. Dowell

M.C. Dowell was the son of Benjamin Dowell, originally of Albemarle Co. VA. He ran a mercantile business in Maury County for many years in the middle of the 1800's. Benjamin Dowell married Elizabeth Desha, whose father was a governor of Kentucky in the early 1800's I think. Major C. Dowell was kind of the surviving son of a large family of children that by in large died very young. John F. Dowell was not M.C.'s brother. M.C's brother John Desha Dowell died in infancy. So who was John F. Dowell? The connection to the Booker's suggests interrelationship between M.C, Lorenzo and John F. But what might thatrelationship have been? M.C. had an uncle John who died in a steamboat explosion in 1816 and left son's Caleb and John (M.C.'s first cousins). Caleb I have traced forward and Caleb's son to Benten Co Tenn. But Caleb's brother John has remained a mystery. Could your John F. Dowell be Caleb's brother and Major C.Dowell's first cousin? About Lorenzo I have no clue but clearly I need to develop more knowledge concerning this family! I'm going to get two day's in the LDS Library next week and if I come up with anything I'll get back to you. Let's keep in touch. Warm Regards, Clark Christoffersen
